IMAGE BUSTERS

(formerly titled Reality Bites)

By Shirley Van Sanden

SUITABLE FOR YEARS 7 TO 10

Jayla is obsessed with being famous. She wants to be the next Super Model, the new Australian Idol, the first Australian Princess – anything! She even considered going in for Survivor Downunder, but she was worried about breaking a finger nail. She is obsessed with her looks, her weight, her clothes and Paris Hilton. But is there more to life than fame for the sake of being famous?

Jack is a couch potato. He spends most of his time in front of the television watching Reality TV Shows. He doesn’t call his friends anymore and he never goes out. What’s the point? Jack is depressed and his friends are getting worried about him.

Fleta thinks she’s found a cure for her depression. She takes drugs. She thinks they make her happy – but only for a little while. Fleta begins to feel paranoid – like everybody is watching her. She thinks she’s living in a Reality TV show – but nobody has told her yet!
When all three do end up on a real Teen Reality Show, at first they are confused – what’s real and what’s not?? But when they are stuck alone together, they learn more about life and each other than they ever imagined.

Through Drama, Comedy and Song, Reality Bites explores the issues of:

DEPRESSION

SUSBSTANCE ABUSE
